Just as doctors, engineers and lawyers have their own professional organizations, so do those who practice agrology. The PEIIA is a professional organization committed to safeguarding the public through competent, qualified members who provide advice on agricultural matters.
In Prince Edward Island, the Agrologists Act was passed April 13, 1960, completing the legal recognition of the profession in the province. Following the legislation, the PEI Institute of Agrologists was created and formally incorporated on June 25, 1970. The mandate of the PEIIA is to safeguard the public by ensuring its members are qualified and competent to provide knowledge and advice on agricultural and related areas.
In 2010 the PEIIA celebrated a half century of upholding a standard of ethics, competency, professionalism and development for its members. Moving forward, the PEIIA continues working on ways to improve the Island’s agricultural industry through consultation with farmers, contribution to decision making and policy formulation, and through discussion with key industry people.
